Village touring on bicycles

Birds Murmur is away from the hustle and bustle of the city and it`s traffic. Here life flows at a gentle pace. Being located in a rural setting does have it`s advantages. With quiet village roads and little traffic it is the ideal spot for a rural ramble. You could get on the bikes we have at the camp and either explore on your own or should you wish for a more fulfilling ride one of our naturalists could accompany you. There are some sights that you could cycle to, if you like go the distance like the Bhoothathankettu Dam and the hanging bridge. Kayaking and Rafting

With the river right in the property Birds Murmur offers some of the best kayaking and rafting experiences in Thattekad. With the evergreen forest of Edamalayar across the water makes the Kayaking experience extra special. It is a great activity if you like to be on the water, experience being close to nature and getting up close to some wildlife. The kayaks that we have are upto international standards. For safety we also provide life jackets. You will be accompanied by an instructor for both rafting and kayaking. The Plantation Experience

With the perennial river Periyar flowing through, abundant rainfall and surrounded by virgin forests and tree cover the whole area is very fertile. Settlers had moved from the lowlands over a century ago, cleared the forests and started plantations. Fortunately they only took the land necessary and left most of the forests untouched. Agriculture is still the main source of income for the local community and most people still live off the land. There are small holdings owned by families that follow multi cropping and then there are larger plantation of mainly rubber owned by companies. We take you though some of these plantations where you would get to know more about the various crops like cocoa, pineapple, pepper and other spices. More than a knowing about the crops its all about learning about the local community. Birding and Nature walk

Birding is perhaps the most popular reason why people visit Birds Murmur Camp. With its close proximity to the Salim Ali Birds Sanctuary, popularly known locally as the Thattekad Birds Sanctuary and the Edamalayar forest the Birds Murmur Camp is perhaps has the best location to explore the area. Rated by Dr Salim Ali as one the best bird sanctuaries in peninsular India the Thattekad Bird Sanctuary is a definite spot to visit for anyone interested in birding. The mixed vegetation, the mountains and the Periyar river makes it one of the bio diversity hotspots on the foothills of the western ghats. Though it does not cover a large area the bird sanctuary is the home to some rare and endemic species of birds. Our experienced in-house naturalists will be happy to take you to the sanctuary as they know the best spots for birding. The spots vary depending on the season and breeding patterns of the birds. We offer an hours complimentary birding session for our in-house guests in the areas near the Camp.
